Goal setting cannot be overemphasized in your personal and professional life, for it is an important exercise for everyone. Without setting goals, we tend to go with the flow and life slips away gradually without any considerable results. It is one of the skills that successful men and women have built into their lives. The rewards of goal setting are many, however, let us examine a few of them:
1. Allows us to be Proactive: Goal setting allows you take responsibility for your life, being proactive instead of being reactive. To be reactive to the events and circumstances of life is indicative of lack of goals or objectives that cause you to be inconsistent. However, goal setting isn't enough. Goal setting is just the first step to achievement. Goals must have strategies and actions to complete.
2. Progress and Achievement: Goal setting is the primary step on the journey toward progress and achievement. It is heartbreaking to know that most people have set out to accomplish great things in their lives without concrete goals and plans to succeed. Every worthwhile accomplishment, achievement begins with clarity of purpose and setting of goals. It is important to reiterate that anyone that desires lasting success must set goals, personal or professional goals.
3. Brings Your Potential Out: We are all uniquely made and endowed by God. Until a demand is placed on you, you may never know the stuff that you are made up of and your true capacity. When you set goals and you go to work on them, you stretch yourself and your capacity to function will be set in motion. Setting goals make known and helps to harness your potential.
4. Setting Goals engages your energy in the right application: For the most part, people tend to waste their energy primarily because of lack of goals and direction. They go out there and go after their objectives trying this or that without any significant results. But with goal setting, you can conserve your energy and expend it the right direction consistent with your goals and expectation.
5. Setting Goals enhances positive self-image: Goal setting helps create and enhance your positive self-image. People without goals or fuzzy goals tend to have negative self-image and with that kind of attitude success is far from reach.
6. Setting Goals helps with time management: Time management is all about managing the activities within the allotted time. Setting goals helps you prioritize those activities relevant and consistent with your desired objectives, that is 'a to do lists'. Most people without clear-cut goals tend to spend time in activities that are incongruent with their expectations and core values. This will sabotage your efforts in accomplishing any set goals.
There are definitely many more rewards to goal setting than was covered here. This blog was just to give you an idea of what is possible and encourage you to set goals if you haven't prior to reading this. Set goals, create an action plan, persevere, and you will be on your way to accomplishing your dreams!
God bless and good luck in your endeavors!
